Summary

The tourist accommodation sector registered 1.5 million guests and 3.5 million overnight stays in January 2023, corresponding to increases of 72.5% and 74.5%, respectively (+45.5% and +45.8% in December 2022, in the same order). Compared to January 2020, when the pandemic effects were not yet being observed, there were increases of 3.2% and 6.5%, respectively.

In January, the domestic market contributed with 1.2 million overnight stays (+38.7%) and external markets totalled 2.3 million (+101.3%). Compared to January 2020, there were increases of 10.0% in overnight stays from residents and 4.8% from non-residents. 

The British market represented 14.8% of the total overnight stays from non-residents, followed by the German (11.3%) and Spanish (10.2%) markets.

The net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation establishments (29.4%) increased by 10.9 p.p. in January (+7.9 p.p. in December). The net bedroom occupancy rate (37.0%) increased by 13.6 p.p. (+9.3 p.p. in December).

In January, 35.5% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not register guests (33.0% in December).
